Week 3

Pray for the poor and the underprivileged in HK

Week 3 : Apr 9 – Apr 15

Scriptures:
箴Proverbs 14:31
Whoever oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.

林後2 Corinthians 8 :7-9,12-15
But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you[a]—see that you also excel in this grace of giving. I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich….For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have. Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality, as it is written: “The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.”[b]

Pray for the poor and the underprivileged in HK

Dear Lord, You are a merciful God who cares for the poor. Your mission statement also emphasizes that the good news should be preached to the poor. You truly understand needy people and their pain.
Although Hong Kong seems to be a very prosperous city on the surface, over a million people of our population live beneath the poverty line.

The economic gap is serious, an overwhelming disparity between rich and poor, together with a problem of cross-generational poverty that is difficult to solve! When some people own too much and some own nothing, poverty occurs. Yet, poverty of people’s hearts is an even more serious problem than that of material poverty. There are so many wealthy people who are yet so poor in their spirit! Lord, may you touch their hearts with your compassion for their neighbours, to give and be generous. And by Your Spirit Lord may those who are poor come to know the truth of Your love and thus become rich so that they can overcome the world and show Your life in them, so that they can improve themselves and no longer feel downtrodden and remain self-pity.

Lord, we pray for your guidance to help our Government set up policy and enact legislation to care for the poor; and improve our education system so as to create more working opportunities for our young people; to put in place a system that will not only help the poor, but to set our city free from poverty. May the charities of Hong Kong stay true and hold fast to their original missions, to empower the marginalised and forgotten groups in our society.

Lord, may you help Hong Kong churches resolve not only to aid the poor, but also to go beyond what society is willing to do for them, with innovative actions, to make known the love of Christ and spread hope throughout the land. In the Lord’s name we pray. Amen.
